signature line

It's time to stock up on Bath & Body Works! Megan's Bargains and More has the scoop on the sale this summer. It's starting on Monday, June 2nd. It's a great time to fill your cupboards with your favorite scents, grab the discontinued products you've been missing and get a head start on Christmas shopping. I know I probably shouldn't since I'm very well-stocked on bath products, but I won't be able to resist!

And while you are at the mall visit Macy's for a FREE pair of Jockey Ultimates Panty on the spot now through June 6th.

Another Excellent Walgreens Coupon
10from30walgreens

Walgreens has another great coupon for Friday, May 30th. This time they are giving you $10 off a purchase of $30 or more. This is a great way to combine sales and coupons to get the most for your money. I really wish I could find my digital camera so I could post the picture of what I bought last Friday. I paid $35 for $185 in merchandise. That's a savings of over 80%!

You can use this coupon with both manufacturer and store coupons. Just remember the subtotal has to be $30 after Walgreens coupons are taken off but before manufacturer's coupons are applied. Be sure to have the cashier scan your Walgreens store coupons first, then the $10 off, and any manufaturer's coupons last.

Target Lightbulb Deal
If you've been planning to try out compact florescent light bulbs in your home this week would be a good week to buy them. Target has GE Energy Smart compact florescent bulbs on sale. They also have a coupon available for $2.00 off GE Energy Smart Instant On Mini Light Bulbs. You can use this coupon on it's own or combine it with a manufacturer's coupon for $1.00 off GE Energy Smart Light Bulbs. The Mini Light Bulbs are on sale this week for $5.00 each so combining coupons brings your total price down to $2.00! If you've ever priced compact florescents you know that's quite a good deal.

ge mini bulb

I've seen some bargain and coupon boards around the net talking about this deal but using the $3.59 10 or 13 watt bulbs. Those aren't the same bulbs as on the Target coupon. Some Target stores are honoring the coupons for the cheaper bulbs, but not all are. The Instant On Mini Bulbs are a little shorter than the standard bulbs of the same wattage. Make sure you are buying the Instant On Mini Light Bulbs to get your full coupon savings!

Be an Educated Shopper
This post was prompted by incidents from my life. I wish it weren't so, but as a consumer you need to arm yourself with knowledge. Stores can and will try to convince you that they are somehow exempt from that laws that protect shoppers. It's up to you to get to know those laws and make them work for you.

All of the following links and examples are applicable to the state of Michigan. If you aren't in Michigan you can find information specific to you by checking your state government's website.

They said: You have to leave the store and return on a different day before claiming the scanner reward.
The Law says: (Michigan Act 449 of 1976 445.360a)
Sec. 10a.

(1) Except as provided in subsection (3), this section applies to a sale at retail which meets all of the following conditions:

(a) There is a price stamped on or affixed to the item.

(b) The sale is recorded by an automatic checkout system.

(c) The buyer is given a receipt which describes the item and states the price charged for the item.

(2) Before bringing or joining in an action as provided in section 10(2), within 30 days after purchasing an item, a buyer who suffers loss because the price charged for the item is more than the price stamped on or affixed to the item shall notify the seller in person or in writing that the price charged is more than the price stamped or affixed. The notice shall include evidence of the loss suffered by the buyer. If, within 2 days after the notification, the seller tenders to the buyer an amount equal to the difference between the price stamped or affixed and the price charged, plus an amount equal to 10 times that difference but which is not less than $1.00 or more than $5.00, the buyer is barred from any further recovery for that loss. If the loss is suffered by 1 buyer within 1 transaction on 2 or more identical items, the amount to be tendered by the seller shall be the difference on each item, plus an amount equal to 10 times the difference on a single item but which is not less than $1.00 and not more than $5.00. If the seller does not tender this amount, the buyer may bring or join in an action as provided in section 10(2).

(3) This section does not apply to a sale at retail in which the seller intentionally charges more for an item than the price stamped on or affixed to the item.

What this means: Once the sale is complete, you've paid for the merchandise and collected your receipt, you are able to collect the scanner reward. There is no need to leave and come back. However, if you have the cashier correct the price during the sale you cannot collect the reward.

They said: We type the code in rather than using a scanner so we're exempt from that law.
The Law says: (445.351)
(b) “Automatic checkout system” means an electronic device, computer, or machine which determines the price of a consumer item by using a product identity code, and may but is not required to include an optical scanner.
What this means: They are only exempt from the law if they don't use any kind of automatic codes. Your local mom & pop grocery whose cashier type "3.99" in manually ARE exempt from the law. A store whose cashiers type the code "35902739" into the register ARE NOT exempt from the law. And, of course, any store with an optical scanner is covered by the law.

They said: Markdowns and clearance items don't fall under the law.
The Law says: There are a couple sections of the law that deal with sale items. Section 445.360a, quoted above, lists only one exception which covers fraud. Section 445.355 covers items at sale price, special price, or reduced price.
What this means: There are no listed exemptions for markdown or clearance merchandise. In fact, the law talks specifically about sale items. In short, if the item has a price tag and the store uses an automatic check-out system it is covered by the law, even if it is marked down.

As of today, I keep a copy of Sections 445.360a and 445.351 in my coupon caddy. It's rare that I run into a retailer who doesn't understand and fulfill their obligations (mostly because I try to correct the cashier rather than claim my rewards), but it does happen. I feel it's important to protect myself.

Memorial Day Weekend May 24, 25 & 26
If you're reading this today then I have one question for you. What are you doing sitting at your computer? It's Memorial Day weekend and that means there is plenty for families to do.

This weekend the Detroit Zoo is hosting their annual Youth Art Competition. Check out the animals and the work of some talented kids!

Visit Greenfield Village to learn all about the Civil War period from both Union and Confederate "soldiers". The event run all weekend, Saturday through Monday, with presentations and activities throughout the day.

You can also head over to Rochester Municipal Park for the Rochester Heritage Festival. You can experience times past with a recreation of a Civil War camp or the Pioneer Playground & Homestead. There will also be a craft show, antique cars, music and more. The event runs both Saturday and Sunday from 1-6 p.m. and is FREE!

A little bit farther north you can enjoy a Beach Celebration at Bluebell Beach in Flint. Head out on Sunday from 4:30-10 p.m. and have fun with a load of family entertainment including music, bounce houses, face painting and fireworks. It's also FREE! Genesee County Parks

Are you a dog lover? Head up to Frankenmuth for the Dock Dogs dog show at Frankenmuth River Place. It's being held at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. You can watch distance diving competitions, a pet parade, Weinerdog Races or shop the vendors. FREE!

On Memorial Day enjoy some of the many parades around the area. Like the 9th Annual Lakes Area Memorial Day Parade that marches from Keego Harbor to Sylvan Lake. The parade kicks off at 10:15 a.m. and is followed by a memorial service. If you are in Washtenaw county you can enjoy the parade in downtown Ypsilanti. It begins at 9 a.m. Or search the web for your city's website to see if there is a parade closer to home.

Not enough to do? Or are your frugal fingers burning to find some deals? This is a great weekend to hit the garage sale circuit. And, once again, the City of Warren is holding their Greatest Garage Sale. I went to this the first year and had a lot of fun. It's more like a flea market than a traditional garage sale, but there are still a lot of bargains to be had. Make sure you plan some time and bring some cold water because it's held in a parking structure and can get warm. It's being held Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., admission is $1.

Those are just a few of the things to do this weekend. Check out Eventful for a list of more family fun. And if you don't find anything to your liking that's OK too. The weather is supposed to be beautiful all weekend and the possibilities are endless!

Today Only at Walgreens
I just opened my email to find a coupon for $5 off $20 at Walgreens.

I'm using the coupon to stock up on Zantac 150 using this coupon for $5.00 off! It's good on any size product and the 8-count box is only $5.49 at my local Walgreens. I can combine coupons and get the Zantac and something else for free!

I'm not sure how many times the coupon is supposed to print, but I've heard most people can print it twice. I was able to print it 4 times using Internet Explorer and I'm up to 22 times using Mozilla Firefox.

This deal probably isn't the best one to use your Extra Care Bucks on since you won't get new Extra Care Bucks in return. It will, however, go toward your quarterly Extra Care Bucks earnings and that's certainly a bonus. Besides, for less than $2.00 cost you are getting your shaving cream for 65% off.

A Target Bargain for Pet Owners
You may have picked up on the fact that I love Target. If I had to list my top 10 stores I'm sure Target would be up in the top 3. What you may not know, however, is that I have two dogs and two cats. What's worse is that one of the dogs and one of the cats are white and we have dark couches. That means pet hair is a constant battle in our house. So what does one have to do with the other? Let me explain.

fur fighter post

Recently Scotch came out with a new product designed to clean pet hair from fabric, The Scotch Fur Fighter. Yesterday I linked to a printable coupon for the starter kit. Today, on one of my new favorite blogs, Attention Target Shoppers, I found a link to a Target coupon for the same product! If you combine the two coupons you get a total of $8.00 savings. With a MSRP of $9.99 you can get your starter kit for $1.99 each. The best thing is there doesn't seem to be a limit to how many times you print either coupon so it's a super time to stock up.

The Target coupon says it's good on a 5 sheet pack and the Scotch coupon says a Starter Kit. The Fur Fighter comes in either a Starter Kit with 5 sheets or a refill pack with 8 sheets. If you point this out to the cashier you shouldn't have too much trouble getting them to take both coupons. Of course, if you're worried you can always go armed with the product details from the manufacturer's site that shows it's only available in a 5 or 8 sheet count.

How do they find those coupons?
I'm sure you've asked yourself how online bargain shoppers find all of those great coupons. It seems like every site you visit has links to a coupon deal you've never seen before. The more you find the more it feels like everyone is getting amazing deals but you. Here's one way I've found to score yourself great coupons. Sign up for newletters on product websites. Here's the catch: not only do you have to sign up but you have to read them. I found that out the hard way. I was guilty of signing up for newletters to get freebies or enter sweepstakes but never bothered to open the emails once I was enrolled. It's easy to discount these newsletters as useless spam, but that's not the case. There are lots of money-saving oportunities to be found inside.

Here are coupons from my email for $1.00 off Johnson's Baby Oil and $1.00 off Johnson's Shampoo. This week would be a great time to stock up at Target because Johnson's Baby Care products are 2 for $6.00 or, with coupon, 2 for $4! Check out the special offers at Johnson's Baby to find even more printable coupons for shampoo, baby wash, lotion and oil. Really, this is a GREAT time to stock up on Johnson's prodcuts.

Target also has a good sale on Clean & Clear Deep Action facial cleanser is on sale for $3.99. However, you can print this coupon for $2.00 off ANY Clean & Clear product to make your cost $1.99! Don't like the Deep Action cleanser? That's OK because all other Clean & Clear products are 10% off and you can print this coupons for $3.00 off 2 Clean & Clear Soft Products.

Another great Johnson's Deal this week is at Meijer where they have Johnson's Buddies products BUY TWO GET ONE FREE. If you print the coupons for $1.00 off found here and here you can get paid to try the Johnson's Buddies Sudzing Bar, which is usually sold for $1.00 or less. Since you will be scanning three products you can usually use the $1.00 off coupons on all three bars.

Try Walgreens for sun protection. Aveeno Coninuous Protection Sunblock Lotion is on sale for $6.99. Pick up the EasySaver book at the front of the store for a $2.00 off coupon. Then you can print this coupon for $1.00 Aveeno Baby or try here for $1.00 off any Aveeno product. (I've had some trouble with that second link.)

Check out CVS for savings on K-Y Yours + Mine Lubricants. Use the coupon found here for a $5.00 off coupon and get $10.00 Extra Care Bucks when you make your purchase. (Extra Care Bucks can be on your next CVS purchase.)

Now that I've gotten you started here are some other coupons you can use to make the most of your savings:
$2.00 off Airborne
$1.00 off Eucerine
$1.00 Infant Tylenol
$1.00 off Children's Motrin
$1.00 off Coffee Mate
$0.25 off International Delights Creamer
$4.00 off Scotch Fur Fighter Hair Remover Starter Kit
$1.00 off Scotch-Brite Ultra NailSaver Absorbent Scrub Sponge
More K-Y Offers

And a rebate: Arm & Hammer wants you to try their New ARM & HAMMER PLUS OXICLEAN Detergent so they're offering you a money back guarantee. If you don't think aren't completely satisfied just fill in the form for your money back.

Here's a hint: Most of those coupons I linked to can each be printed twice by hitting the back button on your browser. And remember to check the wording on your coupons. Sometimes coupons will list a specific product and underneath say something like, "or any Johnson's Baby Product" (for example).

How Meijer can save you money at the pumps
Did you know that you can sign up to receive text messages from Meijer informing you of when gas prices are about to go up? Neither did I, but now that I do you can bet I'm signing up. Just go to Meijer's website and enter your mobile number to get the alerts.

From Meijer.com:
"After you've opted in your cell phone number, Meijer will send a text message confirming your request to join. When Meijer anticipates a need to increase the price of gas due to the rise in cost, Meijer will send a text message to your cell phone, usually before noon. The text message will tell you when the price of gas at Meijer will be going up early that afternoon. The message will usually allow you about two hours to get to a Meijer gas station before the price goes up at the pump."

You can also save money on gas when you shop at Meijer. Look for the "free gas" sign on participating products and get check-out coupons you can use at any Meijer Gas Station.

Looking for Something To Do?
I recently discovered eventful. It calls itself the World's Largest Colletion of Events and I think it may be right about that. I gave it a test run and signed up to received email alerts about events in my city. I've been pretty impressed with the completeness of the list. I've been getting updates about everything from parades, to library programs, to city council meetings. You can also narrow your search and just check out the programs that interest you. I think this site is going to become an important resource for me and my family.

Take Surveys and Get Coupons
Sometime during the past year I started getting Shopper's Voice surveys in the mail. I hadn't heard of the company so I kept throwing them out. The last time, however, I decided to give it a try. I filled it out, sent it off and promptly forgot all about it. Yesterday I was reminded when I opened my mail box and found an envelope of coupons inside.

I received:
$2.00 on any Pledge aerosol product
$3.00 on any two Pledge furniture care products
$2.50 on any Visine product 1/2 oz or larger
$0.75 on any Shout Advanced Laundry Stain Remover
$1.50 on any one Nestle Coffee-Mate 11.5 or 15 oz powder or 16 oz liquid
$3.00 on Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush MAX starter kit
$5.00 on Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner kit
$2.00 on any two Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner refills
$1.00 on Scrubbing Bubbles Action Scrubber starter kit
$1.00 on any Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner

The letter that came with the coupons said I may receive even more coupons and samples yet. Not bad for a couple of minutes spend filling in little boxes. Of course, it's even more convenient that I can do it online. If you like coupons and have a couple of minutes I'd recommend using this service.

Stretching your stimulus check
Did you know you can get more for your money when you spend your stimulus check at certain retailers? Some companies are offering additional savings of 10% when you shop with your tax rebate or stimulus check. These deals are for a limited time only.

Kroger is offering an extra 10% when you buy a gift card loaded with $300, $600 or $1200. There is a limit of $1200 per household and it's a one time purchase only. Don't worry if you did direct deposit, you can still take advantage of the offer. Please check the above link for the press release and more information.

Sears and Kmart are also offering an extra 10% when you purchase a giftcard with your stimulus check. The giftcard must be for the entire amount of the stimulus check. Please check the above link for the press release and more information.

Meijer is offering a $30 bonus coupon for every $300 giftcard you buy with your stimulus check. The bonus checks can't be used on groceries, but I can't see any restrictions on the giftcard. Please see the above link for more details.

Radio Shack is offering a 10% discount on all merchandise purchases over $50 with a tax rebate or stimulus check. You don't need to use the entire amount of the check and will get back the overage on a prepaid Mastercard giftcard. The giftcard can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted. Please see the above link for the press release and more information.

I'd like to thank MoneySavingMethods for pointing me to the Maximizing Money article that outlines these offers.

More Free Admissions
I want to thank both Kate and Sara for telling me about this program. Sara especially for doing my work for me and finding the website!

OK, I'm not going to list every single library participating nor am I going to list every single museum because it would take too long, besides there's an entire website for that. I will say there's a lot of both so this is a very nice program!

Until October 24, 2008 you can visit your Metro Detroit Library and "check out" a pass to visit a local museum. You can get passes for either 2 or 4 people, depending on the museum. All it takes is a few minutes of your time and a library card. So hurry up and visit your local library to get your Detroit Adventure Pass!

Macy's has announced they are extending their sponsorship of this program until 2009!

Target Free Sundays at the Detroit Institute of Arts
OK, this one was a little harder to track down, but the Detroit Institute of Arts has free admission on Sundays throughout the months of May and June, 2008. It's also sponsored by a Target grant but I couldn't find it on the Target website. I did a little digging at the DIA and by checking their events calendar I was able to find it listed every Sunday in May and every Sunday in June.

I'll be updating my Events for May 2008 listing with more details on the programs offered.

Free Magazines
Get an 18 month subscription to Hallmark Magazine through Rewards Gold. You are required to review a lip balm to get this magazine.

Get a subscription to Women's Day through Mercury Magazines.

Get a subscription to Home through Mercury Magazines.

This is my first time using Rewards Gold, but I've seen it on some freebie boards before and haven't heard any negatives so far. Mercury Magazines is a site I've used often and is awesome. I get a number of publications through them and have received every one I've signed up for.

Thanks to Free 2 Be Frugal for the tip on Women's Day and Home.

Great Pouch Sling Sale!
Dittany Baby's excited to announce their second annual Mother's Day Celebration sale! Every pouch sling, no matter it's original price, has been marked down to just $25.00 now through May 10th.

I've bought a couple of slings from this site and have been really happy with the quality. They are simple and effective slings for a nice price. In addition, they wash well and fold up small to fit in diaper bags. If you've been thinking of trying out a pouch sling I'd recommend you check them out!
