Why I blog |
I started this blog when another new mom asked me what I activities I could suggest that were:
a) Very cheap or FREE b) Could be done with an infant
I gave it some thought and started this blog as a way to keep track of my discoveries and to share them with other parents. I didn't intend on including any other money saving ventures besides the odd clearance sale I happened upon. Then I started to realize that it was all tied in together. After all, the easiest way to have something cheap to do is to become a member of an attraction like the zoo or museum. However, those memberships can seem like a hefty expense when money is tight. I saw that saving money on necessities meant more money to enjoy your family. That's why I started to include sales, freebies, clearances and other items to to my blog. In that vein I'm going to start a regular feature where I review the "rewards clubs" that different stores offer. Each review will list the benefits of the card and the costs both in time and money.
I will, of course, continue to focus on family events and attractions that won't break the bank. Every month I find wider and wider resources. So much so that I felt it was time to start the events calendar to keep it all organized. I'll also continue to add links to attractions and events in the sidebar as well as other Detroit area resources.
I'd also like to thank everyone who reads what I have to write. It's amazing to me that I have an audience for this! I love sharing my finds and it's so much fun to have a place to do so.Labels: Site News |

Site Updates |
It looks like I was able to fix whatever I broke without having to do major reconstruction on the page. That means I won't have to spend my weekend at the computer. Yay!
You may have noticed that I've added a few advertisements to the page. These are all ads from site I use and trust. I didn't get into blogging to make money and don't want to clutter up my page with a bunch of ads. However, if I find a program that fits what I'm trying to do here and is a site I trust then I'll go ahead and add it. I want to make this blog an excellent source of ways to save money and have fun while doing so. I think these new ads work toward that goal.
Lastly, I'm all out of discount coupons for Michigan Adventure. Thank you to everyone who emailed me about these coupons. It's nice to know so many people have found me! I hope you and your families have a great time at the park!Labels: Site News |

Free Subscription to Vibe |
Rewards Gold is looking for people to write a review of men's antipersperants and deodorants. As a thank you they are offering a FREE subscription to Vibe magazine.
If anyone is wondering about Rewards Gold and the legitimacy of the site I thought I'd let you know I did a little research. (Especially since I just started signing up for these magazines myself.) From what I've found online they are a legitimate site and you do eventually get your subscriptions. However, it does take a few months before they start coming.Labels: freebies |

Weekend Construction |
I've been working on some changes to the site and must confess it's not going that well. That's why this page is going to be under construction over the weekend. If I do this right the construction shouldn't effect the posts, but only the links and information in the side bars. With any luck I should have everything back up and running by Monday.

Good News and Bad News |
First the bad news. The free Thomas Train coupon I posted is no longer being honored by Toys R Us. I asked the customer service desk why and they didn't have an answer. I emailed Toys R Us today to tell them how disappointed I was that they honored some of the coupons, but not everyone's. We'll see if they reply.
The good news also has to do with Toys R Us and their sister store Babies R Us. First up is the Toys R Us news. They are having a clearance sale starting this Friday, June 27th through July 5th. You get an extra 20% off clearance toys, clothing and shoes. Sale prices are up to 70% off!
Lastly, for anyone concerned about BPA in their baby bottles and who would like to replace them, Babies R Us on Gratiot in Roseville is accepting returns on these bottles. You can bring them to the store and exchange them for BPA free bottles. This is not a corporate wide event but varies from store to store. Some managers are choosing to take back these bottles as part of the Toys R Us/Babies R Us switch away from BPA bottles (by the end of the year they will only carry BPA free). The Toys R Us on Gratiot and the Toys R Us on Telegraph near 12 Mile are not participating.Labels: clearance, FYI |

Office Supply Clearance at Toys R Us |
Yesterday I stopped into Toys R Us and found clearance priced office supplies, of all things! In the party favor section I found a small clearance shelf that had packing tape and 3M hooks marked down. The tape was Scotch brand and was priced $4 a roll. The same tape retails for $5.99 at Staples. They also had some of the smaller rolls with dispensers priced at $2.
In addition to the packing tape there were 3M Command hooks priced $2. These hooks are normally $3-7, depending on where you buy them. You can combine this clearance price with a printable coupon for $1 off and save even more.
Some notes on this deal: The coupon is a pdf file and can be printed as many times as you need. The Toy R Us in question is located on John R Road near Oakland Mall. Of course, if you need packing tape or hooks and don't live in the area it might not be a bad idea to check your local store for the same clearance.Labels: clearance, printable coupons |

Events Calendar |
I'm working on an Events Calendar as an augmentation to my weekly events posts. I'll still highlight inexpensive or free family-friendly events each week, but I'll be concentration more on a few spotlight events. The calendar will be the place to check for the complete listings. This way I can add events as I find them rather than my current system of digging through the notes scattered on my desk. It will be better for you and will give you more time to plan your weekends. It'll be better for me because I won't be spending such big blocks of time organizing and typing huge entries!
If you have an event you'd like me to add to the calendar or a tip you'd like to share you can email me: Bargains 4 Detroit.Labels: FYI |

Big Gardening Sale |
English Gardens Sunrise to Sunset sale starts tomorrow. For three days, June 18-20th, almost everything in the store is on sale 20-50% off! And, for the early birds, there are additional savings from 5:55 - 9 a.m. on Wednesday only. Get there first thing to save 50% on all shrubs & trees, tropical foliage plants and containers!
This might also be a good time to join the English Gardens Garden Club if you had been planning to. You get an extra 10% off of your purchases for a year and 10% off sale prices up to 50% off. There is a $20 membership fee, but it could be worth paying if you are going to stock-up.
My personal rule for joining rewards clubs that have a fee is to ask myself will I save the membership fee or more when I join. If it's a store that I shop at often then I break it down over a year. If it's a store that I only visit occasionally then I look at the purchase I'm making that day. I'm probably not going to do much more gardening this year beyond planting some shrubs, but I'll be doing a lot of gardening early next spring before the card expires. Between the shrubs this year and my gardening next year I'll likely spend over $200. That means my savings will make the card worth buying.Labels: Hot Deals, rewards clubs |

Another SE Michigan Bargain Blog |
I'd like to point you to another money saving blog with a SE Michigan slant, Economic Endeavors. Lavonne writes about freebies, deals and couponing around town.
In her own words: I started this blog as a means of detailing my endeavors to become more frugally and economically minded.
Finances are tight, and my husband works hard to provide a nice home and everything our family needs. I have recently started changing the way that I have always thought about money, and am now striving to live on less than we make.
Check back often to see my progression and take advantage of the money-saving deals and money-earning methods that I find along the way!Labels: FYI |

Weekly Events |
I've been trying to post a list of upcoming events every Thursday, but this week time just got away from me. I was out all day running errands and this is the first chance I've had to sit down at the computer all day. Sadly, it's after midnight and I'm too beat to stay up another couple of hours putting together the post. Never fear! I'll do my best to get it up by tomorrow afternoon. Labels: events, FYI |

The Walgreens Coupon is Back! |
Walgreens has released another one day only coupon to save you $5 off $20.
I was on the fence about going to Walgreens this week. On one hand they have Band Aid brand bandages on sale for $1.00 and I printed a couple of $0.75 coupons from Smart Source. On the other hand I didn't want to go to Walgreens just for bandages. I did want to check the price on the portable awning that's in this month's rebate book (on the third hand?) so I guess I'll print off a coupon and see how much I can save on it.Labels: Hot Deals, printable coupons |

Great Deals at the Mall! |
My current house doesn't have central air conditioning and the window units are yet to be installed. That means I had to get out of the house today or risk melting! I headed off to The Somerset Collection in Troy to window shop. I certainly wasn't planning on researching a post while I was there but I found some great deals I had to write about.
The Disney Store is closing its doors in 8 days so everything is heavily discounted. Markdowns range from 30 - 80%, possibly even more. Discounts are taken off the lowest ticketed price so if you find clearance merchandise it'll be at rock bottom prices. There were a lot of stuffed animals for under $3.00 which could be used to make up a nice gift set by purchasing the matching movie or book. There were some prepackaged gift sets deeply discounted too. Not only are there great savings at the Somerset store, but the online store is holding its semi-annual clearance now!
I already posted about Bath & Body Works semi-annual clearance, but I didn't know that it's time for The Body Shop's clearance sale. Both stores have great products at huge discounts. Bath & Body Works has products advertised up to 75% off and The Body Shop's products are marked down up to 50%. Both stores have some great deal on gift sets too!
I don't know about you but when I find deals like this I love to stock up. I don't just buy for my house either, I stock up on gifts. I remember my mom keeping a supply of inexpensive gift items for teacher, baby sitter, last minute birthday party and holiday exchange gifts. The great thing about these gifts were how nice they were compared to the price she paid. We all know the value of stretching our dollars when it comes to the things we need. This is a fun way to put those dollars to work for the things we enjoy. Besides, every dollar you save is another dollar you can invest in your family, whether it's a savings account, paying off debt, or going on an outing that will build memories to cherish.Labels: clearance, Hot Deals |

Michigan CVS Stores With Coupon Scanners! |
Every week I check some of my favorite bargain blogs to make sure I haven't missed any great deals. One thing I kept coming across were references to CVS coupon scanners. I learned that some CVS stores have scanners where you can check prices or scan your Extra Care Card to print coupons. As soon as I learned this I knew I had to find one or I'd forever be tormented by the great deals I was missing! I started searching my local stores to no avail. I turned to the internet to see if I could find a definitive list, but it didn't seem to exist. Finally I emailed CVS and asked them if they had a list they could send me. Today I got my answer!

Shopping Deals |
As you know, I'm a coupon clipper. Sometimes clipping coupons can get you unexpected bonuses. I mean, you expect to save money, but you don't often expect to get free merchandise using regular coupons. This week, however, I came across this deal at Walgreens.
Walgreens has Satin Care shave gel on sale for $2 this week. They also have a $1.00 off coupon available in their Easy Saver flyer (available in store). If you clipped the Satin Care $1.00 coupon from the Procter & Gamble ad in Sunday's paper you can get your shave gel for FREE!
Have you heard of the American Express Spring Fling promotion? You buy two American Express gift cards for $25 or more each and you can send in for a bonus $25 "Spring Fling" giftcard good at Fandango, Borders, Best Buy and Spa Finder. Not a bad deal, right? This week if you buy two American Express gift cards for $50 or more each at CVS you get back $5.00 Extra Care Bucks! Not only do you get your bonus "Spring Fling" card you get money toward next shopping trip at CVS! Just don't forget to pick up the rebate form from the store. Sometimes you have to hunt around for it.Labels: freebies, Hot Deals |
