Gate admission to the Belle Isle Grand Prix is FREE on Friday, August 29th. You can also get a FREE paddock pass at any Comerica Bank location while supplies last.

What is a paddock pass? From the ticket FAQ:

A paddock pass is an optional purchase. It allows access to the paddock area which is considered the "locker room" of auto racing. The paddock allows up close viewing of race car preparation and teamwork.

Paddock passes or vouchers are provided in advance of the event. Prior to admittance to the paddock area the pass or voucher is exchanged for a wristband at the Paddock Redemption Tent near the paddock entrance gate.

Discount Concert Tickets
If you live in or around Madison Heights you might want to stop in to Madison Beverage on John R Road just south of 12 Mile Road. Why? They have a big selection of discount lawn passes to various concerts at outdoor venues. I found the tickets on the front counter just inside the door.

These are the passes where you pay $5 or $10 per person, including parking, for a lawn ticket and can upgrade to a pavilion seat at a discounted price. The acts aren't the hottest in town, but I've seen some pretty good shows with these discount passes. In fact, I just saw Weird Al at Meadow Brook this summer with a couple of passes my husband brought home. Besides, at $5 a ticket you can afford to take the whole family!

Kids Eat Free!
With grocery and gas prices on the climb it's getting harder and harder to stick to a budget let alone find money to treat the family to an evening out. That's why it's so exciting to find a restaurant that offers a kid's night when kids can eat for free. What would you say if I told you there's a website that has researched all the restaurants in southeast Michigan where kids can eat for free? That's right, Southeastern Michigan Kids Eat Free is your resource for saving money on family dining. So far two counties are complete and the others are still under construction.

Free Gifts with Detroit Free Press Subscription
I may have mentioned once or twice that I'm a coupon clipper. I believe that using coupons is one of the best and easiest ways to save your family money. It doesn't have to take a lot of time and effort either to see big savings. I spend an hour or two a week clipping and organizing my coupons and save over $200 a month on groceries. Heck, during a recent target trip I reduced my bill from $113 to $45 just using coupons. That's a savings of $68!

One of the easiest ways to find coupons is still the old fashioned way - home newspaper delivery. A Sunday only subscription to the Detroit Free Press is under $7 a month. If you subscribe now you will get a gift card to Target, Meijer or Borders! A 7-day subscriber receives a $10 gift card and a weekend or Sunday only subscriber receives $5. Existing customers can take advantage of this too by signing up for EZ Pay online.

More Crafting With Kids (and Adults)
Now that you're inspired to start planning craft projects for those long winter days ahead I'd like to introduce you to Arts & Scraps! Arts & Scraps is a non-profit organization that is committed to recycling and reusing manufacturing waste and household products into craft supplies. You can find containers, fabrics, foam, tile, paint, cork, wax and more at their Resource Center. You can also take advantage of their special program such as birthday parties both in store or at your home. In fact, the resources offered by this organization are nearly endless!

Another Detroit crafting gem is the Miner's Den. They are a great place to shop if jewelry making is your craft of choice. They offer jewelry design, stone cutting, supplies and classes to help you create breathtaking pieces. They also offer a number of great events and freebies. Like FREE watch batteries. That's right, the batteries are FREE! They ask that you give a charitable donation, but it's not required.

And last, but not least is Munro Wholesale Crafts. Munro is mainly a jewelry making supply store, but they carry a little bit of everything. I've come away with everything from beads to doll making supplies to wax for candles. They offer classes in a wide variety of jewelry projects several times a week. They also offer discounts to business owners when you bring your tax ID with you. This is the kind of store you can spend an afternoon poking around and still not discover all they have to offer. I recommend a visit even if you aren't a jewelry maker. I'm not and they're still one of my favorite stores!

Special Deals at the Hazel Park Family Dollar
Family Dollar in Hazel Park is moving to a new location and they have items marked down that aren't on sale at other stores. For example, they have all plant stands and planters marked down 25% while other Family Dollar stores are still full price. I also noticed some mark downs on Playskool toys that weren't on sale at other stores. Since this isn't a chain wide sale and is unadvertised it's a perfect opportunity to snatch up some bargains!

Weekend Gardening
Are you looking for a fun and educational activity you can do at home with your kids? Why not try a little gardening? Kids love to plant their own special gardens and watch their plants grow. Now is the perfect time to create a garden for your little ones without breaking the bank! This time of year garden centers have deep discounts on both annuals and perennials. Home Depot, Lowes, English Gardens and Meijer all have super prices on their clearance racks!

Annuals are a great choice if you want to make this a yearly activity and have room for your child to have their own plot. Annuals allow your child to choose their own flowers and change the look of their garden year after year. Since annuals don't return every year you don't have to worry about planting early to let the roots establish.

Perennials are an excellent choice if you want to see how your plant changes and grows. They are also great if you don't have room to give your kid an entire garden, but have room for to add their special plant to an existing garden. There is still plenty of time in the growing season to plant perennials.

This is also the perfect time to pick up some garden decorations. Most stores have them deeply discounted. Don't limit yourself to garden centers either. Craft stores like Micheal's and JoAnn Fabrics have garden decorations too! The selection is slim, but I'm sure you and your kids will be able to find something wonderful to dress up your new garden.

SoBe Lizard Gear Freebie
Lately there have been a lot of great sales on different enhanced water beverages including SoBe Life Water. If you've picked up or are planning on picking up some of this water be sure to save your labels. I've noticed order forms for FREE SoBe Lizard Gear on tear-off pads at some grocery stores*. The great thing about this offer is there isn't a shipping and handle charge. All you have to do is send in the labels. Just five labels gets you a spiffy flashlight for your keychain. Twenty labels get you a set of 4 movie passes so you can treat the entire family!

You can also register with Sobe and get special offers just for Sobe members. This is a new registration for me, but I've gotten some pretty great savings and freebies by registering with different websites.

*I picked up my form at the Kroger at John R and 9 Mile RD. There were still plenty left a few days ago. The pad was on an end cap at the end of the soda aisle.

Vote for the Zoo!
This is a quick reminder for my friends in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties to get out and vote in support of the Detroit Zoo. The Zoo is looking for your help to pass their millage. If all 3 Counties vote "yes" on the zoo millage it will mean 15 million dollars a year in funding for all of the zoo's wonderful programs.

Another Super Sale at Amazon Grocery
Get a $25 instant rebate on a purchase of $59 or more on eligible products at Amazon Grocery. Just use the code: BTSBASIC during check out to get your savings. Remember, shipping is free on purchases of $25 or more.

You might remember I posted about Amazon Grocery's clearance sale in June. I ordered a case of Orville Redenbacher microwave popcorn during this sale. I paid $19 for 12 boxes of popcorn. The same popcorn costs $3.89 a box at the nearest grocery store so I saved over $2 a box! My shipping was free since they calculated costs on the pre-instant rebate price and it arrived quickly. That was my first experience with Amazon Grocery and I'm definitely going to take advantage of this new sale!

Support the Zoo!
The Awesome Blossom Supports the Zoo!

Tuesday, August 5 is a very important day for the Detroit Zoo. It's the day they are asking you to show your support by getting out to the polls and voting in a millage to keep the zoo funded. Residents in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties will find the question on their ballots this coming Tuesday. The proposed millage would increase property taxes for residents in these counties to help fund the zoo. Increase taxes? I know, but the increase is minor. For a home valued at $200,000 taxes would increase around $10 a year. Yes, ten dollars A YEAR! That's less than one dollar a month to help keep our zoo running. A small price when you consider all the zoo has to offer.

The Detroit Zoo is one of America's best zoo. They were the first in the nation to use barless cages and influenced the ways zoos still operate. They continue to work hard to educate, conserve and entertain.

The zoo is also quite a bargain at just $68 a year for a family membership. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $7 for children. When you add in your parking costs the yearly membership pays for itself after 2 visits for a family of 3! That's under $5 a month for year-round family entertainment. And it is truly year-round. Even in the winter there is plenty to see and do at the zoo with indoor exhibits scattered throughout the zoo a few minute's walk apart.

This is a primary election and only 1 in 5 registered voters are expected to turn out. That means you won't be facing long lines at the polls. You don't have to vote on anything you're not prepared for either. If all you want to vote for it the zoo millage then that's all you have to vote for. Take a minute and show your support for the zoo. You won't regret it!

Sample Wayne County ballot
Declare Yourself (register to vote)

I was unable to find a sample ballot for Macomb County.
